Understanding Masculinities and Violence Against Women course reproduced in Kyrgyzstan

On 12 august 2015, the UN Women Country Office in Kyrgyzstan launched its Academic Gender Summer School in Ashu, Chui oblast. Part of the programme included the module “Masculinities and Violence Against Women” delivered by Communications Specialist Umutai Dauletova based on trainings provided by the UN Women Training Centre.

Organized to mark the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and the Beijing Platform for Action for the advancement of women and girls, the Academic Gender Summer School aimed to develop national gender capacity in Kyrgyzstan and support gender equality in Kyrgyz media, education, research and public institutions. Participants included gender equality and human rights experts and activists, civil society, academia, international organizations and artists.

The UN Women Training Centre course Looking within: Understanding Masculinity and Violence Against Women and Girls aims to challenge harmful masculine norms and practices as a process to promote transformation towards gender equality. The course audience is UN programme and non-programme staff, but can also be adapted for civil society organizations, governments and communities at large. The course is divided into the following modules:

  • Gender power relations
  • Masculinity and violence against women and girls
  • Toward personal change for gender equality
