Development professionals to attend ILO Gender Academy

8 November 2013

To share knowledge and expertise, and advance the goals of gender equality in development work and planning, UN Women is co-sponsoring the second edition of the “Gender Academy”, a two-week programme of workshops and training for gender equality at the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO).

To begin on 11 November in Turin, Italy, the event will host more than 170 professionals from 70 countries. Participants in this global forum will discuss and learn about gender equality and gender mainstreaming in development, with a special focus on the “world of work”. They will acquire tools and knowledge and will also be able to build their own personalised learning programme.

Topics this year include CEDAW and international labour standards for gender equality; gender equality policies and indicators, policies and methods to respond to gender-based violence and risks at work; men’s perspectives and engagement in gender equality; the gendered aspects of informal and rural economies, social protection floors, trade policies, climate change and HIV/AIDS; methodologies such as gender-responsive budgeting, results-based management, gender mainstreaming in projects, and facilitation techniques; as well as strategies for organizational change and to address the negative impact of gender stereotypes at the workplace.

The UN Women Training Centre and the ITC-ILO jointly organized, coordinated, and conducted a course for UN Gender Focal Points, which will be discussed at the Gender Academy.

Professionals from EU Delegations, national governments from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe, UN staff and academics working on projects such as the Financing for Gender Equality Project (a joint initiative of the EU, UN Women and ITC-ILO), will also meet at the Academy. They will be joined by workers’ rights activists from FairWear Foundation from various Asian countries, who will meet to discuss practical methods to implement model policies to prevent and address gender-based violence in Asian textile industries.

This second, 2013 edition of the Gender Academy is co-funded by the ILO, the UN Women Training Centre and the European Commission, and is carried out in partnership with the UN Conference on Trade and Development, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, the European Institute for Gender Equality and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
