Registration is now open for the new edition of our course on Gender Equality at the Local Level in Latin America and the Caribbean

30 November 2017

For the fourth consecutive year, the UN Women Training Centre is launching registration for Gender Equality at the Local Level in Latin America and the Caribbean, which will take place from 12 March until 18 May 2018. This online moderated course will offer recent content on the status of gender equality in the region, its nuances and different ways to spark progress.

"The content of the course was very important in the development of the courses I teach. The reality is that in Latin America, we are lacking information on gender and local empowerment. Municipalities are the direct link between the state and its citizens, therefore it is essential to encourage Municipalities who are sensitive to gender," affirms Nubia Solà Aliaga, participant of the 2016 cohort.

This year’s course will offer a new reflection space regarding the lives of citizens in the region, related to the discussions that took place during the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). The relationships between local/regional/global, rural/urban, poverty, as well as the themes of violence against women and girls will be covered. This will be achieved considering the most recent regional news and practices with the aim of reaching the Sustainable Development Goals. There will also be an emphasis on the allocation of resources for reaching goals around equality.

The content of the course will be centered upon the generation of knowledge and competencies for governance, democracy and development including a gender equality perspective. The course includes a practical exercise that is individualized and completed in four steps, which allows participants to visualize the ideal communities we would like to build together.

"I feel empowered from the content of the 4 modules and enriched by the experiences and material shared in the course (…) It was gratifying to know the progress that has been made, in different parts of the world, in addition to what has not been successful, which we can learn from for the future," shares Lilian Hernandez,” who was also a participant of last year’s training cohort in 2016.

María Arboleda, Gender, Interculturalism and Decentralization Specialist from Ecuador will be the course moderator. She has vast experience in different organizations and entities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Maria will accompany the participants throughout the nine-week course through her readings, written assignments, live videoconferences, forums and other exercises.

The deadline for applications is 28 February 2018.
