30 May 2016

This past 23-27 May in Turin, Italy, the UN Women Training Centre helped deliver the course “Integrating Migration into Public Policy Planning” organized by the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO) and the International Organization of Migration (IOM). This course consisted of a series of workshops that aimed to develop/strengthen capacities of the integration of migration into public policy, as well as the comprehension of the mechanisms, opportunities and challenges faced by migrants, and how to apply a human-rights approach to regulations linked to migration.

The session delivered by the UN Women Training Centre was titled “Integrating the gender approach in the migration-development nexus, Migration in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and related global debates,” a workshop (delivered in Spanish and English) set in the context of the integration of migration in public policy planning. The Training Centre has proposed a gender approach into such policy planning, addressing migration perspective from a current context.

Course session

The session was developed in three core stages: 1) basic concepts to get started, supported by a review of the international framework of women’s rights (CEDAW, ILO Conventions, Beijing Platform, and regulations related to migrant women); 2) gender mainstreaming in migration processes, and; 3) review of priority themes: remittances, care, domestic work, bilateral agreements, masculinities, etc.

The audience of the course (34 government officials and development practitioners) were able to participate in case studies activities that presented issues in two scenarios: migrant reception in destination countries, and return of migrant to origin countries. The course also focused on the integration of the migration and gender perspective into the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
