16 March 2016

This Thursday, 17 March, the UN Women Training Centre will take part in the policy round-table on Gender, Peace and Security organized by the OAS. The event will take place in the OAS headquarters in Washington from 9:00 to 11.30 am.

The OAS is organizing this event together with the Principality of Liechtenstein, the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF) and UN Women in order to identify concrete policy and programmatic entry points for building and strengthening a gender, peace and security agenda in the Americas.

Although significant progress has been made in terms of women’s leadership and participation in peacebuilding, security sector governance and reform processes; a large number of challenges still remain, including the continued prevalence of sexual violence in situations of conflict and insecurity; and the impunity of both the State and non-State actors that perpetrate these crimes.

Nicola Popovic -training Specialist at the UN Women Training Centre- will present the Gender and Security Sector Reform Toolkit, which will enable to implement women’s empowerment and Human Rights in foreign policies so that the inclusion of women in peacekeeping and peacebuilding processes is approached.

The Gender and Security Sector Reform Toolkit is a comprehensive resource that provides information and analysis on gender and SSR accessible to national, regional and international actors involved in gender and security issues in the Spanish-speaking world. The toolkit is designed to be used by policymakers, security officials, civil society organizations, researchers and practitioners and is written in a practice-oriented, accessible language.
