UNESCO’s mission is to contribute to the building of peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. Its gender equality tools, resources and training initiatives contribute to objectives like: 

• Attaining quality education for all and lifelong learning; 
• Mobilising science knowledge and policy for sustainable development; 
• Building inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication. 
  

The International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP), a part of UNESCO, is the only specialized UN organisation with the mandate to support educational policy, planning and management.
