UNU Jargon Buster App Now Includes a Gender Perspective

20 July 2016

The UN Women Training Centre Glossary is now available through the United Nations University (UNU) mobile app Jargon Buster, a glossary app that defines hundreds of UN terms and acronyms, as selected by various UNU sites. The free app is searchable, offline, and can be downloaded for Android and iOS operating systems.

With over 1.000 entries, the current 2.0 version of the Jargon Buster launched in April 2016 serves as a ‘metaglossary’, incorporating terminology from various international bodies. The app clarifies hundreds of social, political and economic terms, aiming to act as a bridge between the UN System, academia and the general public. It incorporates terminology from various international bodies including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and the UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD).

All entries on the UNU Jargon Buster are linked to online references or further readings, and arranged alphabetically, by source, and by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). The app gathers knowledge from eight UNU sites: in Belgium (UNU-CRIS), Germany (UNU-EHS and UNU-FLORES), Iceland (UNU-GEST and UNU-LTR), Japan (UNU-IAS), Malaysia (UNU-IIGH), and the Netherlands (UNU-MERIT – the project lead.

Now, the Jargon Buster app has incorporated a gender perspective with the addition of the UN Women Training Centre Glossary, by including gender concepts as well as international conferences, agendas, initiatives and partnerships related to gender equality. The UN Women Training Centre’s Glossary is an online tool that provides concepts and definitions with gender perspective structured according to the thematic areas of UN Women.
