Gender and Economics

The key objectives of the course are to strengthen the capacity of UN Women staff on the importance of gender-responsive economic policy, and specifically to:

1. Introduce the participants to feminist economics in general and feminist approaches to macroeconomics, microeconomics and international economics;
2. Expose participants to critical analyses of global and regional economic trends, including those related to economic crises;
3. Enhance the skills of participants in formulating gender-responsive economic policy for programme implementation, policy making, and policy advocacy; and
4. Strengthen the capacity of participants to connect with and network with other development practitioners, scholars and policy makers.

The course Gender and Economics, developed in partnership between the EE section, ROAP, ECA and the Training Centre will be piloted in a 5 day face to face training in Turin from 28 November to 3 December.  It will consist of presentations by the instructors, discussion sessions, lab sessions and presentations by the participants. The process will be participatory Participants will have an opportunity to meet informally with the instructors on an individual basis to discuss their Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) projects with instructors and other participating colleagues. The course will include the following topics:

• Section 2: Introduction to Gender-Aware Economics and Methods of Analysis
• Section 3: Gender and Macroeconomics: theory and practice
• Section 4: Decent work, unpaid care work, and social protections
• Section 5: Gender, income inequality and poverty
• Section 6: Gender, trade, investment and value chains development
• Section 7: Gender, public Finance, and Investing for gender equality
• Section 8: Economic Policy Making and the SDGs: How to reach the goals
