This e-learning course provides a general introduction to the evolution of the concept of gender equality within the international human rights system. It provides a foundational understanding of the centrality of gender equality to human rights discourse generally and how this is addressed within the UN human rights system specifically. Participants will gain an overview of the various legal and normative frameworks that promote women’s rights, address gender identities, and advance practical approaches to securing gender equality. The course will also examine critical concepts such as intersectionality and cultural relativism as they relate to the enforcement of existing international approaches to advancing gender equality and human rights.

Description: The new edition of the UN Women Training Centre's Gender Mainstreaming course will take place 17 September-19 October 2018, including one face-to-face week-long workshop in Istanbul, Turkey. A blended course, the Gender Mainstreaming consists of four weeks of online training at UN Women Training Centre’s eLearning Campus and one week face-to-face; where the participants will be able to solidify what they have learnt with practical exercises, dynamic and participatory activities and case studies. Participants will also have the invaluable chance to network with one another.
The objective of the course is to build on the capacities of the United Nation’s System, stakeholders, development organisation and all those interested in incorporating a gender perspective in public policy, programs, projects, institutions and organisations. With this in mind, the course will cover: basic concepts on gender mainstreaming and gender mainstreaming in the programme and projects cycle, in public policies and in institutions/organizations.

The degree offers critical knowledge and training in gender studies, as a crucial aspect of any and all peace efforts. A live Webinar by KIT (The Royal Tropical Institute) and the UN Women Training Centre will discuss Feminist pedagogies and training for gender equality: a paradox? Trainers Maitrayee Mukhopadhyay, Franz Wong and Leticia Berrizbeitia will discuss tensions in gender training using the Professional Development Programme for Gender Trainers as an illustration of how such paradoxes may arise and how they can be navigated. This event will also act as an informative session on the Programme that is currently receiving applications for its second edition.
Two sessions will be held on Wednesday 6 June 2018 (7:30 a.m. AST and 10:00 a.m. AST) to discuss what makes the principles of feminist pedagogies feminist? Especially when they can be applied in training in ways that contradict gender justice and social transformation. Moreover, if gender training intends to disrupt dominant understandings of “gender”, how does this harmonise with what is commonly understood as feminist pedagogies?
