GTCoP - Community of Practice Training for Gender Equality

This gender toolkit is designed to provide practical guidance to OCHA staff to effectively integrate gender into their day-to-day activities. This publication provides guidance on how to incorporate gender into humanitarian work, in accordance with the organization’s 2012 Gender Equality Policy. Included are definitions of key gender terminology as well as practical tips, examples, and a step-by-step framework for assessing and addressing gender issues within the OCHA programmes.

Aimed at improving practices for women and girls in lower- and middle-income countries, Menstrual Hygiene Matters is a major resource for WASH practitioners and anyone wishing to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issue. It comprises nine modules, which cover key aspects of menstrual hygiene in different settings, including communities, schools, and emergencies. Each module is accompanied by its own toolkit, which includes checklists, technical guidance, case studies, further information, and a bibliography. 

This tool kit of materials (resource guide, flash cards and a poster) aims to assist programme and field staff involved in the design, implementation and/or evaluation of community-based WASH programs to work effectively with both women and men. The material is based on learning from research on gender outcomes from rural water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Vanuatu and Fiji. 

This guide aims to meet needs in relation to Integrated Water Resource Management. Much of the information can be used more broadly in WASH programming. The guide is a reference document to assist water and gender practitioners and professionals as well as persons responsible for gender mainstreaming, and anybody else who is interested in the water sector. It is a compilation of newer resources – documents, papers, books, case studies, tools and toolkits - on gender mainstreaming in Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM). It is meant to support action and further reading and research.

This toolkit aims to provide a reference point for water utility managers and staff to aid them in reflecting and addressing urban water utility service improvement by applying gender mainstreaming. It presents some simple practical steps to gender mainstreaming in water and sanitation development and management. It provides step by step guidance on how to mainstream gender and what to remember in each step. The toolkit tries to address some of the most common gender issues in water supply management and water supply institutions and proposes key actions that should be addressed to enhance gender equity and equality

This toolkit aims to provide task teams with guidance to improve gender mainstreaming in project design, implementation, and evaluation. To do so, it does not focus only on the question, What about women? It also asks, What is the role of men?—that is, What can men do to include women more effectively in the project and account for their concerns and priorities? The target audience is task team leaders (TTLs) and operational team members, including gender-focal persons on these teams.

This toolkit provides technical instruments to tackle some of the most significant issues affecting women in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector in Palestine. It outlines the findings of a series of workshops in Ramallah and in Gaza City, organized by UN Women in 2015 to unpack cluster-specific issues related to priority gender needs and responses and identify ways to address challenges for gender sensitive humanitarian responses. The WASH cluster participants identified a number of priorities and action points, including the need for capacity building and the development of an instrument for WASH partners to enable them to better identify and address gender specific needs. In light of these recommendations, GVC, with its expertise in Gender and WASH, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) – Jerusalem Office – created this toolkit in coordination and with the support of UN Women and the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA). 

This document demonstrates how water, sanitation and personal hygiene (WASH) needs of women survivors of disaster can be addressed to minimise risk to violence that they may otherwise face. It provides a compilation of practical experiences that have attempted to reduce risk to violence against women (VAW) in the provision of WASH facilities in the early response phase of an emergency. The document was developed for use both by WASH engineers as well as emergency personnel dealing with social processes for a more holistic approach to WASH programmes and addresses twin components: delivery of efficient engineering solutions and effective processes for social renegotiation.

 This document outlines essential elements that WASH practitioners should take into account at all points in the programme cycle in order to enhance a gender-responsive approach to their work so that gender-responsive programming in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector contributes to progress towards gender equality and important WASH results.

This tool kit aims to assist development practitioners to ensure that gender perspectives are incorporated into development initiatives, and to monitor and evaluate gender equality results. It presents a menu of gender equality outcomes, results, and indicators that may be selected or adapted by users. While the tool kit focuses primarily on the sectors and strategic priorities of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Australia’s aid programme, it is designed for a wider audience of development policy makers, planners, implementers, and evaluators. The tool kit will assist specialists in particular sectors to identify gender equality results and indicators; it may also be used by gender specialists who work across a range of sectors.
