GTCoP - Community of Practice Training for Gender Equality

This Working Paper examines the topic of men and masculinities, investigating the reasons why men and boys should be involved as partners when promoting gender equality in the world of work. The paper also features important information on ILO's training materials related to engaging men for gender equality.

Rozan Pakistan's Humqadam Program conducts formative research on attitudes and perceptions among young men and boys on GBV and its link to masculine identity. This systematic qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the program's interventions with a selected group of boys and men presents the findings of this evaluation. 

This training module is designed for use by facilitators and programme planners who wish to engage young men in issues around gender based violence and masculinities. It is designed as a 15 session series that can be run with groups of 10-25 men in community settings. Its overall objectives are to: 

• Help participants to understand structural influencers in the construction of masculinities in our society. 
• To recognize the impact of socialization especially messages around masculinities on sexual health and sexuality relationships between men men’s relationships with women men’s roles and responsibilities 
• Allow participants to reflect on the self and highlight an individual's role and power to bring about positive change in the society 
• Identify alternative ways of 'being a man', and provide a forum for healthier ways of practicing it, and 
• Sensitize men and boys to recognize violence, its link to power and mobilize them to stand up against gender based violence at a personal and community level.
  

The purpose of this literature review and analysis is to provide insights into the health and livelihood challenges faced by young men in the Southeastern European region. This paper provides an overview on the realities of young men between the ages of 15-25 in the Southeastern European region4 with a particular focus on young men from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia. It will also present data, and in a few cases an initial scan of some successful program and policy examples, from the region in the areas of young men’s overall development, gender equality, sexual and reproductive health, substance abuse and mental health, and experiences of violence.

This training manual supports the overall goal of FemNet's Men to Men Programme, namely to create a critical mass of African men who are able to influence communities, organizations and the public to believe in and practise gender equality as a norm. The manual on masculinities provides rich content for trainers and facilitation tips for each session. Overall, the manual is meant to: a) Enhance men’s knowledge on the link between masculinities, GBV and the spread of HIV/AIDS. b) Equip men with practical skills for training other men on combating GBV and the spread of HIV/AIDS.

This guide is based on the training materials and participant’s expereinces during the implementation of the project titled Positive Masculinities: Building a culture of nonviolence within Nairobi’s informal settlements. The guide outlines the sessions as conducted at the training held on 18th – 22nd June 2012 in Nairobi bringing together young men from Kibera, Mathare, Huruma, Kariobangi and Dandora informal settlements in Nairobi. The primary target users of the guide were the trainees in their replication activities within their respective communities. However, the guide can be adapted to other settings with the necessary modifications. Relevant handouts, some adapted from other publications and internet sources, are provided in the appendix to support the sessions

The goal of the LIVERESPECT ™ program is to provide coaches, educators and mentors the tools to help raise awareness of healthy, respectful manhood and prevent violence and discrimination against all women and girls. This curriculum is the product of A Call to Men’s 20+ years of experience working with and training men across the US.

This research study examines the state of manhood in the US, UK, and Mexico to determine in which areas men need help the most to liberate them and change society’s narrow views about masculinity. In order to investigate and answer these and other questions, this study constructs a tool called the “Man Box”, i.e. set of beliefs, communicated by parents, families, the media, peers, and other members of society, that place pressure on men to be a certain way. The overall conclusion is that the Man Box – a set of socially reinforced rules about what “real men” should do – is alive and well in the US, the UK, and Mexico.

These Guidelines provide practical guidance and effective tools for humanitarians and communities to coordinate, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate essential actions for the prevention and mitigation of gender-based violence, throughout all stages of humanitarian response—from preparedness to recovery. The purpose of these Guidelines is to assist humanitarian actors and communities affected by armed conflict, natural disasters and other humanitarian emergencies to coordinate, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate essential actions for the prevention and mitigation of gender-based violence (GBV) across all sectors of humanitarian response.

This toolkit, "Mainstreaming GBV Considerations in CBIs and Utilizing Cash in GBV Response: Toolkit for Optimizing Cash-based Interventions for Protection from Gender-based Violence" assists practitioners in collecting the requisite situational protection information on risks for affected populations with an age, gender, and diversity (AGD) lens, identifying community-based or self-protection mechanisms, informing tailored and protective cash-based interventions, and preparing a monitoring system that is based on identified protection Section I includes a focus group discussion/interview tool to assess and mitigate potential risks, as well as a post-distribution monitoring tool.

Section II offers a protocol to assess and address GBV survivors’ needs for cash assistance within GBV case management services, as well as a post-distribution monitoring tool.
